Protect yourself and your baby from flu during pregnancy

When flu season is around the corner, you are more vulnerable to get it as your immune system tends to be weaker at the time of pregnancy. As a mother, you certainly wouldn’t want to get sick either especially when you need to be healthy for your baby. It isn’t necessary that every woman will get the flu but if they do there can be a lot of complications.
What are some of the complications?
Having the flu can increase your chances of having a miscarriage since you get weaker at this point of the time and it affects the baby.
Most people don’t seem to take the proper precautions and treatments to prevent and cure the flu. It can be dangerous if the flu continues for several days, especially for your baby. You should know about the best ways to treat it and how to prevent it.
How to treat yourself if you have the flu:
Drink plenty of liquids- you do not want to be dehydrated.
Ask for help- It is absolutely okay to ask for help and ask family or friends to help out with chores while you rest.
Visit a doctor or take antivirals- Antivirals don’t just reduce the symptoms of the flu but also the time period for which you have it.
Take pain medication- You can take the tablets prescribed by your doctor which are safe to take while you are pregnant and it can help with body pain as well as fever.

Ways to prevent the flu:
Wash your hands- Make sure to wash your hands as often as possible and after touching any surfaces. Carry hand sanitizer around as well.
Avoid crowds- You might not want to head out into a crowd and expose yourself to other people in case they may be sick.
Don’t touch your face- Do not touch your face especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. If the germs are on your hands, you are at a higher risk.
Get a flu vaccine- Even though the vaccine may not be entirely effective, there will be milder symptoms for you. The antibodies present in the vaccine will be passed on to the baby so he or she will be protected for about 6 months after the vaccine is done. The antibodies pass through breast milk as well so if you start breastfeeding that helps your baby.
Make sure that you have a good idea of how to prevent getting the flu and how to treat it. You definitely want to keep yourself and your little one safe. Practicing these things and keeping a good diet, and drinking plenty of fluids can really help you in the long run. It can reduce the chances of you and your baby getting sick.
